Shark Bay, Western AustraliaInformation for Backpackers visiting Shark Bay, World Heritage AreaThe Shark Bay World Heritage Area is a must see destination for Backpackers (or anyone) heading north in Western Australia. The entrance to Shark Bay itself is approximately 700km north of Perth. Shark Bay is home to the famous dolphin feeding at Monkey Mia as well as natural attractions such as Hamelin Pool's stromatolites and the stunning Shell Beach. Other popular places to visit in Shark Bay also include Nanga Bay, the town of Denham, Little Lagoon, Fancois Peron National Park and Ocean Park Aquarium (shark feeding!). For Backpackers visiting Shark Bay, we recommend camping on the lawn area at Monkey Mia resort for a small (~10) fee or if you need a bed, you can also stay in the resort's dorm rooms. Both these along with many other types of accommodation are available at Monkey Mia Resort are only an easy stroll away from seeing the dolphins. Other places to stay within Shark Bay includes Denham where there is several caravan parks and if you wish to camp on scenic beach under the stars, you can get special permission from the shire to do so for one night and for only a small fee. Do not camp without permission and please keep anywhere you visit as beautiful as you left it! Photo Gallery for Shark Bay, Western Australia
There is only a small shop in Monkey Mia and the 2 supermarkets in Denham are a little bit on the expensive side as is the petrol. You can stock up on much cheaper supplies as you pass through Geraldton from the south or Carnarvon from the north. Don't forget the beer! The entrance to Shark Bay is opposite from the Overlander Roadhouse which generally has decent priced petrol. If you are planning to stay at Monkey Mia, you will still have about 2 hours driving from the Shark Bay Entrance & the Overlander Roadhouse.
