Swan River

Attractions in Perth for Backpackers - Swan River

Swan River

Fed mostly by the hills of Perth, the Swan River flows through the Swan Valley, Perth and makes its way out to the Indian Ocean via Fremantle. Although narrow in some sections, the river opens up in the area between the Perth CBD and the suburb of South Perth. For Backpackers visiting Perth, you can take a nice stroll along the Swan River from Elizabeth Quay to the west (heading towards Kings Park) or to the east towards Heirisson Island and the eastern suburbs.

10km Swan River Walk
If you have time and are feeling energetic, you can walk all the way around this section of the Swan River in a loop from Elizabeth Quay (or any starting point) and using both the Causeway Bridges and the Narrows Bridges. Don't forget to stop and try and spot some Kangaroos on the south end of Heirisson Island and admire the view of Perth from the South Perth side. This walk is approximately 10km and would take about 2 hours without stops so allow 3 to 4 to make it more enjoyable.
